The cold of Lake Changjin is as cruel as fighting

Visit the Memorial Hall to Resist U.S. Aid Korea

In late November 1950, in Changjin Lake, North Korea, the temperature was minus 40 degrees Celsius, rustling white snow fell from the sky, and the ground was covered with ice. The retreating US troops fumbled forward vigilantly. Suddenly, they found rows of Chinese People's Volunteers soldiers lying on the opposite side.

These soldiers in thin cotton-padded clothes were holding guns, and everyone kept fighting.

But in the face of the attacking enemy, they did not open fire.

The U.S. military approached only to discover that the entire company of volunteer soldiers had been frozen into "ice sculptures"-this scene appeared in the film "Changjin Lake" released on the National Day file.

The image of volunteer soldiers being frozen into "ice sculptures" is also reflected in the "Ice and Snow Changjin Lake" scene at the Memorial Hall to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea in Dandong City, Liaoning Province.

"'Ice and Snow Changjin Lake' reproduced the magnificent scenes of the Changjin Lake Battle on the Eastern Front of the Second Battle to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea by means of sound and light. Through the main blue color and the piles of ice and snow, the audience can intuitively feel: this During the battle, the main enemy the volunteers faced was cold, as terrifying as a cannonball." said Zhang Xiaoying, deputy curator of the Korean War Memorial and a research expert on the Korean War.

According to Zhang Xiaoying, the 9th Corps of the Volunteer Army was originally prepared to take a rest and refurbishment in Liaoyang, Shenyang and other places. However, due to the emergency, more than a dozen trains rushed to North Korea after only a short stay in Shenyang.

"During the train stay, the Northeast Logistics Department was very surprised to see that the troops entering the DPRK were so thinly dressed, and immediately mobilized the cadres and soldiers to take off their coats and hats and exchange them for them. However, due to the short parking time, many coats and hats did not have time to be sent to the train. In this way, most of the soldiers of the 9th Corps entered the Changjin Lake area wearing big brimmed hats, rubber shoes and thin cotton-padded clothes."

"Most of the soldiers of the 9th Corps of the Volunteer Army are from the south, and they don't know much about the weather in the north." Zhang Xiaoying said, and the Changjin Lake area is the most bitter cold area in northern North Korea.

"During the campaign, heavy snow fell continuously in the theater. The officers and soldiers were poorly dressed, lacked food and bombs, and endured hunger and cold. Some troops could only eat one meal of frozen sorghum rice in a day or two, and frostbite was severe. In addition, due to the severe cold. Due to the weather, many mortars equipped by the Volunteer Army were unusable, the bolts of the guns were frozen and could not be fired, and communications were extremely difficult."

During the visit, the instructor Gao Zhenzhen told a story: In early December 1950, the volunteer soldier Zhu Yanfu was ordered to join the army to participate in the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea.

In the Battle of Changjin Lake, Zhu Yanfu's company braved the freezing temperature of minus 30 degrees Celsius and fought bloody battles with well-equipped enemies for three days and three nights. Only he survived in the company.

"Zhu Yanfu was injured in a coma during the battle. The cruel battle and bad weather caused his body to be seriously injured. After 47 operations and a coma for 93 days, his hands and limbs below the knee were amputated, his left eye was blind, and his right eye vision was reduced. To 0.3." In 2019, Zhu Yanfu was awarded the national honorary title of "People's Model".

Even under such harsh conditions, the Volunteers have fulfilled their strategic tasks.

The reporter learned at the Memorial Hall to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea: On November 27, 1950, the 9th Corps of the Volunteers fought back against the general offensive launched by the US 10th Army in the Eastern Front Theater, and completed the division of the US forces in the Changjin Lake area on November 28. After several days of fierce fighting, they gave the 1st Infantry Division and the 7th Infantry Division a destructive blow. , Opened the battle on the eastern front and guaranteed the safety of the volunteers on the western front.

"During the collection of cultural relics from the Anti-U.S. Aid Korea, the children of Song Shilun, commander and political commissar of the 9th Corps of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army, donated the telescopes and carbines he used during the Anti-U.S. Aid Korea period to the memorial," said Zhang Xiaoying.

In addition to the "Ice and Snow Changjin Lake", there are also scenes such as "Fighting Yunshan City", "Steel Transport Line", "Invincible Tunnel", and "Fighting on Ganling" in the Memorial Hall to Resist U.S. Aid Korea and Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea. .
