Only 15,900 people have requested to benefit from "caregiver leave" since the entry into force a year ago of this device which allows them to stop working for three months to take care of an elderly or disabled loved one, the National Family Allowances Fund (Cnaf) announced on Tuesday.

Funded by the National Solidarity Fund for Autonomy (CNSA), this "daily caregiver allowance" (AJPA) reaches 52.08 euros net per day for a single person, said the Cnaf, ahead of the national day caregivers this Wednesday.

A little less than 16,000 requests, "it is obviously very little, in view of the millions of caregivers potentially concerned" by this leave, commented Morgane Hiron, the general delegate of the associative collective "I help you".

Especially since in view of provisional figures communicated in April, the number of leaves actually granted is probably much lower, she stressed.

According to this official, this is partly explained by the low awareness of the device - on which "the government, associations, but also employers, must communicate more" -, but also by its "too restrictive" character, which "does not not adapt to the reality of all caregivers ”.

Fight against the isolation of family caregivers

The group therefore asks that it last longer, be better compensated, and that its accessibility criteria be broadened - it is granted to assist an elderly person with loss of autonomy or disabled, but not suffering from a serious illness. , for example. Even among those who are entitled to it, some give it up because, in view of its short duration, they wait for the moment when their loved one "will need them even more", or because "they do not dare to declare themselves to their family. employer, for fear of being shelved, ”according to this official. Awareness "that this is a societal issue and not an individual" must still progress, she insisted.

This year, the 12th day of caregivers has as its theme the fight against the “isolation” of the people concerned, which often results from a “vicious circle”, according to Morgane Hiron: “We lack time for ourselves, therefore we give up his leisure time, or else we have to stop working, which deprives us of a place of social integration ”. A lack of time due in particular to the large number of tasks: according to an Ispos / Unknowns study carried out for the insurer Macif and published on Tuesday, 91% of caregivers provide their loved ones with at least one mission relating to the role of caregiver (care of pressure ulcers , physiotherapist, dressings…).

However, many cannot devote themselves exclusively to their vulnerable loved one: according to a study published Tuesday by Drees, the statistical service of social ministries, some 725,000 carers must support their elderly parents while still having dependent children.
