Robots boost Greek postal service

Join the Greek Postal Service, a new fleet of yellow... Robots that sort parcels.

At the Greek Post's sorting center in Athens, 55 small robots, each equipped with four wheels and powered by artificial intelligence technology, are moving around, speeding up an often arduous process.

The robots scan the zip code and then weigh the parcels before unloading them into proportional mail bags placed around a pallet.

The robots are part of a digital restructuring program implemented by the state-owned company to deal with the increasing number of packages caused by online shopping during the Corona pandemic.

"Until recently, sorting was done manually with increased demand at the same time, which was often causing errors, thus delaying delivery to our customers and increasing costs for the company," George Konstantopoulos, chief executive of Greek Post, told Reuters.

Robots sort up to 80 percent of parcels.

Konstantopoulos said the process is now about three times faster, ensuring that packages are delivered to their owners the next day.

These devices can handle up to 168,000 packages weighing up to 15 kilograms per day, and need to be recharged only every four hours and for only five minutes.

"The purpose is not to replace workers with robots, but to support and increase the efficiency of manpower," Konstantopoulos said.
