According to a recent study conducted by American researchers, the milk of a mother who has contracted Covid-19 contains antibodies that are very beneficial for the protection of the baby against the disease.
But it could also help in the treatment of severe forms.
This is what
The Guardian
reports on
Monday.
The results of the study were presented by Rebecca Powell, an infectious disease researcher in New York City, at the 15th International Breastfeeding and Lactation Symposium a few days earlier.
The conclusions of the research that she carried out with her team have not yet been validated by the scientific community.
Antibodies present up to 10 months after infection
The American researcher analyzed the breast milk of 75 mothers recovered from Covid-19.
Result: 88% of them would have produced antibodies specifically to fight against the virus.
Some of these antibodies would also have the ability to neutralize the disease.
According to Rebecca Powell, this discovery could lead to new treatments for the coronavirus.
For example, it is considering the development of an inhaler for patients that would prevent a deterioration in health leading to hospitalization in intensive care.
The report found that breastfeeding women who were affected by the virus would continue to produce antibodies in their milk for four to ten months after their infection.
“It could be an incredible treatment,” concludes Rebecca Powell.
