Popular movements in the face of this growing crime in India

Indian police officials said on Friday that a case that sparked shock and outrage across the country is being investigated over the nine-month gang rape of a 15-year-old girl.

Police officer Dattaraya Karaali told reporters that 28 people, including two juveniles, were arrested in Thane, near Mumbai, noting that a special team had been set up to investigate the crime that started last January.

Carly said the police registered the case on Thursday after the girl told a relative of her ordeal on Wednesday.

Carly explained that the girl's ordeal began when her partner filmed her in an obscene way, and then his friends later, according to what was reported, used the video to blackmail her.

Local media reported that the girl had identified 33 suspects in the attacks, which caused shock and anger in India.

Indian government data indicates that 28,046 cases of rape were reported in India in 2020, while activists say there are many unreported incidents of rape.
