“Friends of Cancer Patients” participates in the “Be proud of my gold” campaign

In conjunction with the International Children’s Cancer Awareness Month, which falls in September of each year, the “Friends of Cancer Patients” Association, the community organization of public interest concerned with spreading awareness about cancer and providing the necessary support for its treatment, based in Sharjah, organized a series of events to promote awareness of childhood cancer. With the aim of collecting the necessary donations to support the treatment of children with cancer, and emphasizing the importance of early detection of the disease.

The association, as part of its membership in the International Organization for Childhood Cancer, participated in the global campaign “Brown in Gold”, launched by the American Childhood Cancer Society, which aims to illuminate buildings and prominent landmarks around the world in gold during the month of September, by placing a gold ribbon on the buildings.

Two main landmarks of the Emirate of Sharjah, the "House of Wisdom" and the "Sharjah Archeology Museum", are decorated in gold, and the "Dubai Frame", the largest building in the form of a frame in the world, lit up in gold, in solidarity with children with cancer, in addition to spreading the word "Dubai Frame." Awareness of the disease.

As part of its commitment to support children with cancer, the Friends of Cancer Patients Association called on prominent buildings, historical monuments and archaeological sites to support efforts to raise awareness of childhood cancer, by lighting them in gold during the month of September.

As part of its activities on this occasion, the Friends of Cancer Patients Association organized a virtual symposium, entitled "Children's Cancers... Knowing the Warning Signs", presented by Dr. Eman Taryam Al Shamsi, a pediatric hematologist and oncologist, and targeted parents and health care experts in the field of children's cancer.

The symposium reviewed common childhood cancers, their causes, early warning signs, and shed light on lesser known facts about childhood cancers.

The association will also organize a virtual symposium on leukemia, or what is known as leukemia, in the last week of September.

The Friends of Cancer Patients Association used its social media platforms to spread awareness of childhood cancer and its effects on young patients and their families, in addition to collecting donations to support their treatment, and published an exclusive interview with a hematologist and oncologist, Dr. treatment options available, and how to deal with side effects.

The Society participated in the follow-up interview with a cancer survivor, showing the journey of treatment and recovery, to spread hope in the lives of cancer patients who are still in the treatment phase. The two interviews were published on its own accounts on “Instagram”, “Twitter”, “Facebook”, and LinkedIn and YouTube.

Dr. Sawsan Al-Madhi, Director-General of Friends of Cancer Patients, said: “A study conducted in 2018 concluded that childhood cancer is the fourth leading cause of death among children under 15 years of age globally, and that leukemia or leukemia, Cancer of the brain and spinal cord (cancer of the central nervous system) and lymphoma or lymphoma are the most common types of cancer among children under the age of 14, while children's cancer cases accounted for 9.5% of the total cancer cases in the UAE. The cases of leukemia or leukemia reached one third of the total cases of childhood cancer, with fears of a rise in the number of childhood cancer cases in the country, according to the World Health Organization.

Al-Madhi added, “It is very important to know this information, statistics and regional and global studies, in addition to discovering the early symptoms of childhood cancer, given that early detection of cancer in most cases enhances the rate of treatment and complete recovery by 50%, and it is our duty and responsibility as parents, teachers, and individuals, To protect our children from cancer.”

In turn, Manal Ataya, Director General of the Sharjah Museums Authority, said: “The lighting of the Sharjah Archeology Museum in gold during the month of September, to celebrate the Children’s Cancer Awareness Month, is part of the strategic partnership and close cooperation between the Sharjah Museums Authority and the Friends of Cancer Patients Association, and this also comes from From our commitment to social responsibility, and our belief in the importance of involving all members of society, including cancer patients, through programs specifically designed to meet their needs, and thus contribute to improving the quality of their healthy lives.”

For her part, Marwa Obeid Al-Aqroubi, director of the House of Wisdom, said, "Our children do not only represent youth and fun for us, but they are the guarantee of the future, and ensuring their safety is one of our most important obligations, because when we help them, we help all of humanity."
