Will the future hydrogen plane be from Lyon?

Airbus, Vinci and Air Liquide, all major players in aviation and hydrogen, indicate in any case this Tuesday that they have chosen Lyon Saint-Exupéry as the pilot airport for their project to develop the use of hydrogen in the aeronautics.

Tests are scheduled in this direction in 2023, with the installation of a gaseous hydrogen distribution station in Saint-Exupéry.

This will supply the runway buses, trucks and handling equipment at the airport, as well as the heavy goods vehicles circulating there.

No massive distribution before 2030

From 2023 to 2030, liquid hydrogen infrastructures should be deployed to allow the loading of hydrogen into planes, before setting up from 2030 a massive distribution of liquid hydrogen at Saint-Ex.

If the Lyon air transport decarbonisation tests prove to be conclusive according to Vinci, owner of the airport, it will deploy the same facilities on its European airport network.
