• Criticism 'The good patron': how an immense Javier Bardem fixes, polishes and gives splendor to the corrosive irony of León de Aranoa

Fernando León de Aranoa (Madrid, 1958)

returns to the scene not exactly of the crime. Almost two decades ago, his film

'Mondays in the Sun'

won the Golden Shell in San Sebastián and became the film event of its year. Now he comes back and does it with the reverse shot of that story of the desperate unemployed. The desperation is still there, Javier Bardem is still there, but the one who counts is the one in charge, the businessman.

'The good boss'

is an acid and funny fable of our time, but from above. From the top perhaps.

19 years ago 'Mondays in the Sun' won the Golden Shell. It was a story about the unemployed. Now is the story of the one who did not give them work. How is it to be interpreted? There was nothing planned. The story comes naturally. In fact, I started years ago with this story, I left it, I took it up again ... But it is true that connections do arise and it is true that this film has something of a dark side to it. Although they talk about very different topics, it can be said that one is complementary to the other. The precarious employment landscape is still there, change, first, the sense of humor ... already in '

Mondays in the sun'

I had. Sometimes at the cost even of the excessive drama of the characters themselves. But this is not a genre film, it is not a comedy, but it does have the comedy way without fagotiating what is important. The film is gradually darkening, but without losing the smile. Can, in view of the film, that the best way to tell the drama is comedy? Humor is not forced. Humor is exuded by the character, and the character is a man who is in control of his entire life until he is no longer in control. And there, in misfortune, in the loss of balance, even if it is a privileged one, we all always find ourselves. Does the entrepreneur of 'The Good Boss' want to be the image of the entrepreneur today? I have never wanted to make short-term films that limit themselves to commenting on their time. Or that's my wish. The cinema is too laborious a job to leave it in an anecdote. The idea is that what you do transcends you and goes to the roots or the consequences of what you are telling. The normal thing in this art is to give the voice to the one who normally lacks it, not to the one who in a real way has enough power and means of making themselves heard. Why make a movie for which you already have a voice?

The good boss

suffer a lot, watch out. Not because of his status but because he is the victim of his own mischief. But suffering suffers. I never wanted to draw a villain. From the beginning we were clear that the viewer had to empathize with the character that Bardem plays, with Mr. Blanco. And that was the challenge. He had to be a warm, close character ... His problems are real, even if he goes too far in solving them, otherwise there are countless films about the suffering of the working class and very few about those that are not supposed to. they have so much to suffer ... Yes, the businessman is always a supporting character, unlike in real life who is the protagonist. Usually he is the one who gives the reply to the protagonist. Empathy with the worker is easier for obvious reasons. Can you be a good employer? I'm sure you can.But it is true that the logic of the system is different. Premium the benefit and the capital gain and the entrepreneur can be all the good that the market leaves him. There is a tension there that is very difficult to ever resolve in favor of the worker. But I want to think that it is possible, even if the system forces the boss to be evil. Generalizing is bad, although I am aware that saying that generalizing is bad is already a generalization. Is the market humanizable? Or, otherwise, is there an alternative? I am optimistic and I believe in human beings. That said, in the market's logic there is the impossibility of correcting oneself and of correcting certain abusive situations. What could Mr. Blanco say to the unemployed Santa, the two, two decades apart, Javier Bardem? We talked about it many times. We imagine how interesting the meeting of these two characters would be.They are both charismatic, they both have wit, they both know how to move in their respective environments ... And they both loved to speak. Santa always blames the company and Blanco keeps repeating that the workers are never happy ... The film is quite pessimistic in every way despite everything ... Yes, the funny thing is that among the workers there is no hint of solidarity or class consciousness. Do you want to be a portrait of what happens? '. When the previous preparation work, I found that then the consciousness and feeling of class was very present. That still exists in heavy industry. But in the service or tertiary sector it does not exist at all. Labor mobility means that no ties or ties of resistance are generated. And that is already the case, the characters in the film are a reflection of reality in the sense that they do not expect solidarity from anyone, but they do not offer it either. Do you think that we live in a situation of social change blockade despite everything? There are exceptions , but in general fear, hierarchy, vassalage prevail ... That is why I have resorted to humor in my film. The only way to say certain things without getting killed later is by using a sense of humor. I don't think there is any real possibility of change. Social media, for example, they give us a false sense of freedom, but their scope is nil. It creates a space for protest that is completely useless. Even the protest is articulated. People are holy, they endure unsustainable situations excessively. Another problem is that no one feels like a working class anymore. We all feel middle class, as if that puts us on the opposite side to where we are. We have assumed that living with a mortgage is normal and almost successful. They have you trapped and, at the same time, you feel free. It is a perfect mechanism. It reminds me of the maxim that if they tell you "obey me" you can always go against it and not do it. But if they tell you to disobey, whatever you do, you obey. We are in those.Even the protest is articulated. People are holy, they endure unsustainable situations excessively.
