A giant lotus flower will captivate the minds at "Expo 2020 Dubai"

Expo 2020 Dubai has unveiled at TERRA - the Sustainability Pavilion a moving artwork by renowned British artist Matt Collisho, titled Equinox, commissioned by the international event.

The 3D artwork uses zoetrope, an ancient form of animation, to create a captivating optical illusion.

The work is a giant lotus flower, surrounded by an orbit of insects that rotate on its vertical axis.

The flower's petals provide "cloaks", which give the insects movement inside to make it appear that they are flying, eating and pollinating the flower in perfect harmony.

The petals serve as a habitat for the insects, whose enlarged size highlights the catastrophe that will follow their decline.

The work, which is more than five meters high and three meters wide, is accompanied by a selection of poems that sing about nature, including poems by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and the famous English poet William Blake.

The entire work is a poetic soliloquy of nature and its subtle order, inspiring millions of visitors to reconsider their relationship to the natural world.

“My work on Interaction is about how we humans interact with the world and the choices we make,” Matt Collisho said. The topic of sustainability in Tirra provided the context – literally and figuratively – for an experience that invites reflection and reflection on the unstable nature of the Earth’s ecosystem.”

“Grimshaw's design of the interior hub, with its circular geometry, water tank and skylight, provides a delightful framework for the artwork, which I hope will inspire people to want to protect their environment. I am honored to be invited to participate in Expo 2020 Dubai, which is also a huge platform to engage people on a large scale.”

Mona Al Ali, Senior Director, Terra - Sustainability Pavilion, Expo 2020 Dubai, said: “Equinox stands at the heart of Terra, fulfilling the primary purpose of the Sustainability Pavilion, which is to showcase the amazing delicacy of our natural world and our shared duty to preserve it for the benefit of humans and planet alike.”

"I have no doubts that this beautiful artwork, which is the result of a fruitful collaboration between Matt, (FutureCity) and the Terra team, will capture the imagination of all who watch it and inspire them to become a change-maker in the future."
