Don't let women bear the Hard Mode in the workplace

A few days ago, "Talk Show 4" set up a workplace theme competition.

This episode of the show completely "fired" out of the circle, and many viewers laughed.

Why did the joke successfully tick the audience?

To put it bluntly, it has not hit the pain points in the workplace.

Among them, the twin sisters Yan Yi and Yan Yue's program focused on the "arrogance and prejudice" encountered by women in the workplace, and won the resonance of many female audiences.

The related topic "Are the beauty and high heels a must-have for women in the workplace?"

Of course, the talk show itself is a kind of performance.

As Yan Yi and Yan Yue said when they complained, “If the first person to land on the moon is a woman, she may also wear high heels.” “It seems that all women have to be beautiful before they work. It's rude not to dress up..." These are more like artificially amplifying conflicts, aiming to create a comedic effect.

How many women in the workplace can't go to work without "full makeup"?

Female employees do not respect the company culture if they do not wear high heels?

Such a statement is not entirely in line with reality.

Taking individual industries as an argument, using excessive emphasis on the "bias" of women's appearance, and trying to summarize the "fullness" of gender discrimination in the workplace, appears to be biased.

As a result, many viewers left messages on related topics, thinking that makeup and high heels are just a matter of avoiding the importance, and did not mention the real pain points of gender discrimination in the workplace, such as different pay for equal work, promotion ceilings, and difficulty in finding jobs for women.

However, the meaning of talk shows is to entertain the public and relax.

Trying to use a few minutes of paragraphs to fully explain the social issue of gender discrimination in the workplace is a bit difficult.

Moreover, at the end of this talk show, Yan Yi and Yan Yue also emphasized that what they are really worried about is that women are only used as decorations in the workplace and fragrances that add to the atmosphere.

Women are not a vase. Workplace struggle has nothing to do with gender. Work ability is the embodiment of workplace value.

Everyone understands this kind of principle.

The problem is that it is easy to say but difficult to really solve the problem of female employment discrimination.

For the same job application, why do many women enter the Hard mode?

The problem is not gender itself, but the theory of "fertility punishment" at work.

Affected by traditional concepts and physiological conditions, parenting and assuming family responsibilities are regarded as women's bounden duties.

Some employers believe that women cannot take care of their career and family, and they are more unwilling to "pay the bill" for female employees' marriage and parental leave.

Many companies also set invisible thresholds in the interview process. Company HR cares more about when employees get married and have children than the parents of job seekers, and even use different methods to "force" female employees not to marry or have children and to work for the company.

For the majority of women, it is still difficult to make career ideals reflect reality.

Under the premise of similar work abilities, male and female job-seekers have considerable differences in employment rate, salary, proportion of job positions, and promotion speed.

The times are advancing, and "fertility punishment" is not an unsolvable problem.

Breaking the shackles of ideas is the first step to liberate women.

Since the founding of New China, the slogan "Women can hold up half the sky" has greatly increased the employment rate of female groups, allowing more female compatriots to enter the workplace and find more possibilities in life.

In recent years, with the improvement of women's education level, the phenomenon of "gender reversal" has even occurred in the education field.

In many places, girls are generally better than boys, and it is not uncommon for women to work harder to pursue higher education and excellent diplomas.

However, although many times, women pay more education costs, but they are not favored by the job market. Instead, they are more likely to encounter the helplessness of setting up a higher and higher “glass ceiling” in the workplace.

To crack the gender discrimination in the workplace, society needs to think more about "what to do".

In my opinion, the most critical point is to dispel the anxiety of employers, especially to solve the problem of "three phases" (pregnancy, maternity leave, breastfeeding) employment cost sharing for women.

If the childbirth cost of female employees is borne by the company, it can only force the company to find ways to avoid costs, and even aggravate employment discrimination against women, causing more women to fall into the Hard mode of the workplace.

From this perspective, to eradicate the soil of gender discrimination in the workplace, a reproductive cost sharing mechanism must be established to build a reproductive-friendly society.

For example, adjustments to social welfare policies, compensation for employment costs to enterprises, and tax reductions and exemptions can effectively reduce the burden on enterprises and make enterprises more willing to open the door to employment for female employees.

Recently, the State Council Information Office released the National Human Rights Action Plan (2021-2025).

Among them, it is clear that, unless otherwise specified by the state, recruitment shall not be restricted to men or give priority to men.

At the same time, the issue of gender discrimination in employment will be included in the labor security supervision work, and joint interviews will be conducted with employers suspected of gender discrimination in employment.

Such an official statement is also a wake-up call.

For a small number of companies that "get into the eyes of money", it is necessary to further strengthen labor supervision, unblock the channels for complaints about gender discrimination in the workplace, and increase penalties for illegal recruitment and discriminatory recruitment.

Eliminating gender discrimination in the workplace and creating a fairer employment environment requires all parties to work together to help women in the workplace.
