The museum is China's first rural film history museum. It was rebuilt on the basis of the original building of the Dali Cinema. It was completed and opened in 2011. It has been in operation for ten years and attracted more than 5.3 million visitors.

There are more than 47,000 items in the collection, including more than 6,400 sets of exhibits such as movie screening equipment, movie posters and old photos, focusing on the history of film screening in rural Dali.
