The municipality of Thionville (Moselle) is part of the experimental project "Free city without tobacco".
The latter aims to improve the quality of life of the inhabitants and especially to fight against smoking, reports Lorraine Actu.
The mayor of the town, Pierre Cuny, launched the operation on September 7.
1.2 million daily smokers in the Grand Est
The city councilor made it clear that this project did not mean that smokers were going to have minutes.
Its implementation “means that we are going to sanctuary certain places [town hall, public facilities, schools, etc.] in tobacco-free zones.

This operation is not intended to stigmatize, but to denormalize cigarettes, he added.
The “Tobacco Free City” project has two challenges: making tobacco less attractive and proposing a strategy to reduce its use.
According to the National Committee against smoking, 30.1% of the population of the Grand Est, or 1.2 million people, are daily smokers.
The region's proximity to countries such as Belgium or Luxembourg, where the price of tobacco is lower than in France, would explain these figures.
