They are tired of being singled out by animal protection associations.

To clear up any misunderstandings, the agricultural world will discuss from this Tuesday at the Rennes International Livestock Show (Space) on the theme of animal welfare.

A question which "is part of the daily life of breeders", according to Marcel Denieul, president of the show which is held until Thursday at the Parc Expo with more than 1,100 exhibitors expected.

"Our world of breeding is now becoming a question of society", he recalls, in an allusion to the spectacular actions of associations which have called into question the practices of certain breedings.

By addressing this theme, the Space "is there to try to reduce these areas of misunderstanding (...) between livestock professionals and civil society actors", specifies Didier Lucas, president of the chamber of agriculture of Côtes-d'Armor.

A philosopher to talk about the human-animal relationship

Concretely, a debate will be devoted every day by sector to this theme: this Tuesday for poultry, Wednesday for cattle and Thursday for pigs.

"We must listen to the whole of society in order to find the means to adapt agriculture to societal demand", underlines Didier Lucas.

Among the expected guests, the philosopher Jacques Ricot, who will bring his perspective on the human-animal relationship.

Animal competitions are also making a comeback for this 35th edition which will be held, unlike last year, face-to-face.

During its last face-to-face edition, in 2019, Space welcomed around 105,000 visitors, including nearly 15,000 from 122 countries.
