Video service HBO Max will release a series about DC supervillain Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot, also known as the Penguin.

The project will be a spin-off of Matt Reeves' Batman starring Robert Pattinson.

The premiere of a full-length detective story about Bruce Wayne in the early years of his fight against crime is scheduled for March 2022.

According to Variety, the series will tell about Penguin's rise to power in the underworld of Gotham.

The script will be written by Lauren Lefranc, who had a hand in the creation of the projects "Agents of SHIELD."

and Helok Grove.

The production is executive produced by Matt Reeves and Dylan Clarke, also working on Batman.

The main role can be played by Colin Farrell ("Lying Down in Bruges", "Gentlemen"), who will appear in the same role in Reeves' film.

According to Variety, Farrell has already been offered to join the project, but it is too early to make definite conclusions about the outcome of the negotiations.

Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot is a ruthless gangster from Gotham, one of Batman's main enemies.

He got his nickname because of his specific appearance.

The comic book hero was born with a nose like a bird's beak.

For this reason, peers mocked Oswald, and his father hated him.

In the years that followed, Penguin killed many of his offenders.

Before the advent of Batman, Penguin was a rising star in the Gotham underworld and was involved in weapons smuggling.

One of the criminal's serious hobbies was birds, which he used from time to time for his atrocities.

Previously, Cobblepot has repeatedly appeared on the screen.

This character is featured in the 1960s TV series Batman and the 1966 film of the same name.

The role in both projects was played by the American actor, two-time Oscar nominee Burgess Meredith.

His extensive filmography includes films from the Rocky franchise, as well as McKenna's Gold, The Twilight Zone and The State of Frenzy.

Even more, the audience remembered the Penguin performed by Danny DeVito in Tim Burton's 1992 film Batman Returns.

In the story, the hero teams up with businessman Max Shrek (Christopher Walken) and Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer) to get rid of Batman forever.

The film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Makeup and Visual Effects, and De Vito was nominated for a Saturn Award.

Cobblepot can also be seen in the popular TV series Gotham, aired from 2014 to 2019.

There he was played by Robin Lord Taylor.

In the center of the plot - detective James Gordon, investigating the murders of Thomas and Martha Wayne.

The tape also tells about the life of a young Bruce Wayne, who is just looking for his own way.

In addition, Penguin is one of the heroes of a number of animated films and TV series.

Among them - "Batman" (2004-2008), "Batman v Dracula", "Batman: Attack on Arkham", "Harley Quinn", "Batman Limitless: Animal Instincts", "Batman: The Return of the Masked Knights."

The new HBO series Max isn't the only spin-off spin-off of Matt Reeves' upcoming film.

In the summer of 2020, the site announced a series about the Gotham police.

The action of the tape will unfold in the same universe as "Batman" with Robert Pattinson, and the main characters will be detective stories.

The project is being produced by Reeves and Terence Winter (The Wolf of Wall Street, The Sopranos).

The latter performs the duties of the producer and screenwriter of the picture.

Other producers include Dylan Clarke, Adam Kassan (Black Mass), Daniel Pipsky (Dusk Till Dawn) and Rafi Krohn (Tales from the Loop).

Matt Reeves promises that the series will expand the universe shown in the feature film and allow it to be explored in detail.

The project is expected to focus on the anatomy of corruption in Gotham City.

He'll probably launch a new Batman universe.

“This is Batman that most viewers have never seen before, and we're sure fans will want to spend more time in this new movie-inspired universe,” says HBO Max.

The service is preparing other projects based on DC comics. Among them - "Dark Justice League", "Green Lantern", "Aquaman: King of Atlantis". The latter is expected to premiere in October 2021.
