The Nicaraguan Government is holding in customs the copies of the next novel by Sergio Ramírez that the Spanish publishing house Alfaguara sent last week to the country of the 2017 Cervantes Prize. The blockade was a harbinger of the harassment of Ramírez, whose house was raided and that he received an

arrest warrant

last Thursday, when he was in San José, Costa Rica. Just yesterday, the author of

Margarita, is beautiful the sea

arrived in Madrid, where he will have to plan a season of exile.

Tongolele did not know how to dance

, Ramírez's book kidnapped in Nicaragua is a crime novel that alludes directly to the political reality of his country. His antihero is an obscure agent of the Sandinista revolution who, at this point in the 21st century, has become the mercenary linking the underworld and the elites of the dictatorship.

The action takes place during the protests against the dictatorship of 2018

, crushed by the police and by Sandinista paramilitary groups and connects with

Ya no one cries for me

(2018), a novel with which it shares theme, setting, tone and some of the characters.

Has the plot of the novel been the

trigger for the arrest warrant

against Sergio Ramírez? Apparently not: the authorities have demanded several reports from Alfafguara that summarize the plot to free or maintain the kidnapping of the specimens. Meanwhile,

the text is already circulating in the country via WhatsApp

.

The writer, who was Ortega's chancellor and vice president between 1981 and 1990 and who recounted the memory of those years and his revolutionary disenchantment in

Goodbye Boys

, had so far avoided harassment by the Government, partly thanks to his international fame. Successive arrest campaigns against Daniel Ortega's opponents had whistled past him until now. Although the arrest warrant is not going to be carried out, presumably, the shield that protects the novelist is already making itself felt.

Last Saturday, the Royal Spanish Academy and another 13 of the 24 language academies published a statement against the harassment of Ramírez, a member of the Nicaraguan Academy and a corresponding member of the RAE: «Words must be used freely by all ; Avoiding the free expression of all kinds of opinions, especially those of political content, is

the most intolerable form of arbitrary exercise of power

because it leads to the oppression of citizens for the exclusive benefit of the ruling class ”, said the statement from the academies.

Ramírez's colleagues in literature have also mobilized to ask for his freedom of movement. An open letter that considers that "

the charges that have been made against him - and against almost 40 political prisoners -

are the palpable demonstration of the repressive drift of the regime, determined to silence its opponents through jail or forcing them into exile." Among the signatories, the names of Enrique Krauze, Mario Vargas Llosa, Jorge Volpi and Pilar Reyes appear.

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) and the office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights for Central America and the Dominican Republic also asked Nicaragua on Friday to stop the "arbitrary and illegal" detentions of opponents, after 36 people have been arrested before the November elections in that country.

In a statement dated in Washington and Panama, international organizations condemned

the "criminalization" of opponents

and, in particular, the persecution of Sergio Ramírez.
