[Explanation] From September 10th to 13th, the 2021 World Robotics Conference will be held in Beijing. At the convention expo, the most dazzling star is the space station robotic arm exhibited by the China Academy of Space Technology.

[Explanation] According to reports, this space station manipulator weighs about 738 kilograms and has a maximum load of 25 tons. It is the "brother brother" of the Chinese space station manipulator-the first sample product on the ground. The two are the same in appearance and function.

Prior to this, the sample product has assisted astronauts in successfully completing two exit missions in space, and is a key equipment for the Chinese space station project.

[Concurrent] Wang Youyu, Chief Designer of Robot Arm of China Space Station

We are equivalent to the role played in the astronaut’s exit activity, which is equivalent to the function of a means of transportation, or a ladder.

[Explanation] Compared with the robot on the ground, the space station manipulator is more adaptable to the environment. The thermal control scheme combining active and passive allows it to work normally in the extreme high and low temperature range.

[Concurrent] Wang Youyu, Chief Designer of Robot Arm of China Space Station

In order to overcome the influence of the space environment temperature, we designed a set of active and passive thermal control control schemes. The outer covering is its thermal control multi-layer, and there are a series of heat pipe fluid circuits inside it. These are used to achieve the entire thermal balance.

[Explanation] In addition to overcoming environmental factors, completing these difficult tasks in space requires the robotic arm to be able to move freely. For this reason, the space station's robotic arm is designed with seven joints and two end effectors. When working, it is combined with a small robotic arm. The longest "armspan" can reach about 15 meters, and it can crawl when necessary.

[Concurrent] Wang Youyu, Chief Designer of Robot Arm of China Space Station

Compared with international robots, most robots cannot crawl. Occasionally a few can crawl, but they rarely crawl because they face many technical difficulties. There is a long-term spatial environment effect. When it crawls, it The crawling mouth will be exposed to space. After a certain period of time, it will face aging and degradation factors. In order to protect these mouths, we may design an automatic closing device, which increases the difficulty of the robotic arm crawling. Open the closure device, and then crawl again.

[Explanation] Regardless of the "big physique" of the robotic arm, it can also perform "fine work" on the space station. According to the current working conditions, it has been verified that its accuracy can reach within 20 mm.

[Concurrent] Wang Youyu, Chief Designer of Robot Arm of China Space Station

When carrying astronauts out of the cabin, the accuracy we require is also very high. Now that we are carrying astronauts out of the cabin in orbit, the accuracy we have achieved has far exceeded that of the robotic arm of the International Space Station. When assisting astronauts out of the cabin, , Through the camera and third-party measurement, we predict that its accuracy can reach 20 mm or less, and the accuracy may be even higher for special tasks.

[Explanation] In order to ensure the safety of the astronauts, the design unit installed multiple handrails and sensors for fault monitoring on the robotic arm.

[Concurrent] Wang Youyu, Chief Designer of Robot Arm of China Space Station

Once it detects that the temperature exceeds the standard, or the location does not meet the requirements, we will overcome this difficulty through corrections.

Of course, it has been in orbit for 4 months and there has been no failure. Of course, ours is just in case.

[Explanation] Wang Youyu introduced that the manipulator of the space station is designed to have a service life of 10 years. After the astronauts are out of the cabin for maintenance, the longest service life can reach 15 years.
