, has died of cancer at the age of 39, her mother announced this Sunday.
The singer of that band, formed in 2002 on the
ITV
program
"Popstars: The Rivals"
, had announced last year that she had breast cancer.
Her mother, Marie, announced the news of the death on Instagram along with a black and white photograph of the singer.
"Many of you knew about Sarah's fight with cancer and you know that she fought very hard from her diagnosis until her last day. She left peacefully this morning," he posted.
"I know that she would not like to be remembered for her fight against this terrible disease, she was a shining star and I hope she can be remembered that way," he added.

Girls Aloud, made up of five young people - Sarah Harding, Nadine Coyle, Nicola Roberts, Cheryl Tweedy and Kimberley Walsh - was
successful for a decade
until their separation in 2013.

reached number 1 on the UK charts at Christmas 2002, and stayed at the top for four weeks.
