Four days after an infuriating 2-1 defeat in Libya, the Gabon team have dropped again in the race to qualify for the
2022 FIFA World Cup
.
This September 5, 2021 in Franceville, the Gabonese conceded an unfortunate draw against Egypt, in Group F.
The Panthers led 1-0 after the exclusion of defender Omar Gaber (second warning in the 70th) and a goal from Jim Allevinah.
In the 73rd minute, following a one-two in the Egyptian area, the winger had indeed managed to infiltrate and push the ball into the net.
But in the 90th minute, on a long ball deflected from the head, Mostafa Mohamed presented himself against Anthony Mfa Mezui.
His lob attempt was certainly deflected by the Gabonese goalkeeper, but the Egyptian striker followed and equalized in two stages: 1-1.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and his partners can only blame themselves this time.
They could have folded the meeting much earlier.
Especially if the striker Aaron Boupendza had not missed two big opportunities: on a half-volley at close range (45th + 2), then on a lost duel against the opposing goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy (49th).
For the Egypt of Mohamed Salah, it is on the other hand a good result, while waiting for the other meeting of group F, Angola-Libya, scheduled for September 7 in Luanda.
