Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis say no

Charlène from Monaco has been

trapped

in South Africa for

several months

, away from Prince Albert and his children, Jacques and Gabriella.

The reason?

A severe ear, nose and throat infection that prevents her from getting on a plane and has forced her to undergo surgery.

The former Olympic swimmer's nightmare began in March, days before she traveled to her native South Africa to participate in a rhino conservation project.

The princess then underwent an intervention in the mouth, quite common before the placement of a dental implant: a maxillary sinus lift.

"Surely what happened to him was they were going to put an implant on him, for which they did an elevation of the maxillary sinus, and

the intervention was complicated by sinusitis, which is not something uncommon",

explains the otorhinolaryngologist Claudio Fragola. "In these cases, in which the sinusitis has been caused by a surgical process, it

is usual to proceed by prescribing antibiotics and nasal washes. If, after waiting a few weeks, the condition is not resolved with antibiotics

or it is clearly seen that the sinus lift,

need to be operated again

to clean the area and remove the infectious picture.

This has been the case with Charlène. "The Monegasque princess underwent a new operation two weeks ago and will have to wait several more, even months, until the infection and inflammation disappear completely.

Faced with an ear infection, it is better not to fly

Being separated from her family has made the process even sadder for the princess. Speaking to the South African news channel

News24

, she explained that

her medical team alerted her that, due to the infection, she could not withstand a flight above 20,000 feet in height (6,096 meters), because the pressure in her ears was not would match.

"What has been extremely difficult is not being able to return to Monaco for my 10th wedding anniversary. It is a very painful moment," he confessed.

"When there is a conspicuous sinusitis, which affects the throat and ears, serous otitis usually occurs. Mucus accumulates in the ears and they do not ventilate well",

Fragola comments. This is especially important when traveling by plane, when practicing sports such as diving or skydiving, or when rapidly descending ports and mountains, as the body faces large pressure changes. Thus,

someone with a cold should not fly.

"The nose compensates for the pressure in the ears every time we swallow. However, if they are swollen or mucus, this does not work. So,

the ears hurt a lot and can get perforated.

When we see a pilot with one of these pictures, we leave it two or three weeks without flying, "says the ENT.

How to relieve earache on an airplane?

Flights are not the most comfortable situations for the ears, which are very sensitive to pressure changes, especially sudden during landings.

To prevent perforations in the eardrum or injuries to the inner ear, it is necessary to

avoid

, above all, to

make the trip in the presence of a respiratory infection.

Additionally,

swallowing, yawning, or chewing gestures

can be helpful.

Also practice the

Valsalva maneuver,

which consists of taking air, covering the nose and mouth and blowing increasing the pressure in the pharynx, as it helps to ventilate the ear.

Symptoms of an ear infection and when to see a doctor

But how to identify the presence of one of these infections?

Charlène felt a "very strong" earache that forced her to go to the specialist.

His case, an infection of the ears, nose and throat at the same time, is not, however, very common.

Fragola indicates that

ear infections tend to occur in isolation, and that nose and throat infections are often seen together.

In this sense, Esteban Scola, from the Santa Elena Clinic, recalls that the

main symptoms of an ear infection are plugging, pain, hearing loss and suppuration:

"If there is very severe pain, suppuration, or if no improvement is seen after 24 or 48 hours taking analgesics, the patient should see a doctor ".

The nose infection is usually accompanied by a runny

nose

,

with thick, greenish or very whitish mucus;

in addition to

nasal packing

and, occasionally,

headache.

Sneezing, itching, fever, or the sensation of mucus flowing down the throat

are also not uncommon

.

Therefore, it is not strange to see in consultation, according to the ENT doctor, infections of both areas at the same time: in the end, the nose is halfway between the ear and the throat.

The main symptoms

that make you suspect a

throat infection are pain in the area and fever.

To treat the aforementioned infections, it is important to know their cause. Fragola warns that,

on many occasions, an antibiotic is incorrectly prescribed, when the origin is viral.

"In general, nose infections tend to be viral symptoms, such as the typical winter viral rhinitis; and among ear and throat infections there are many caused by bacteria, in which cases antibiotics are indicated."

Thus, according to Fragola, the

usual

treatment

for otitis is usually composed of drops, an anti-inflammatory and, in addition, in the case of otitis media, an oral antibiotic.

For throat infections, an anti-inflammatory is prescribed if plaques are not seen in the area of the tonsils and, if they are, an antibiotic.

In nose infections, if it is a case of viral rhinitis, the standard one, nasal washes, a spray and an anti-inflammatory are indicated, and if there is sinusitis, it depends.

"If it has been originated by a surgical intervention, as in the case of Charlène, it is necessary to take antibiotics and to do nasal washes, even sometimes, to operate it".
