No one's homeland, never heard from

One day two months ago, a phone call accidentally opened up the dusty past of Liang Debao's family.

"After collecting information, the volunteer martyr Liang Bai may be a relative of your family who went abroad to fight more than 70 years ago..." Hearing this, the family was shocked and even a little "unbelievable."

Liang Runquan said that the unbelievable reason was that his great-grandfather joined the army when he was in his early 20s. He had no direct descendants and no relics to put his affection on.

"I heard from the elderly in the family that there was a grandfather from my ancestors who went to participate in the War of Resist US Aid Korea, but this was a farewell, and there will be no news from now on..." Liang Runquan recalled that every year when they go to the grave at Qingming Festival, they will make sacrifices at the graves of their ancestors. .

71 years ago, the Chinese People’s Volunteers joined the Korean people and army in a bloody battle for 2 years and 9 months and won a great victory in the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea.

Liang Debao said, "When my parents were alive, they always wanted to find a grandfather, but it was too difficult and clueless. If it wasn't for the country to give up, it might never be found."

Soon, the results of Liang Debao's blood sample collection and comparison came out, confirming the identity and kinship of Liang Baiyou as a martyr.

It was verified that Liang Baiyou was a martyr, male, with an unknown date of birth, and his native place was Jinta Lijiafo Zhuangzi, Liangzhou District, Wuwei City, Gansu Province (now Group 7 of Xinsheng Village, Heping Town, Liangzhou District).

He was a soldier of the 570th Regiment of the 190th Division of the 64th Army of the Volunteer Army.

It is reported that the process of tracing the martyr's relatives is somewhat special.

There was no seal that could clarify the identity of the martyr’s remains, so the staff searched for relevant historical materials and archives. Based on the martyrs’ sacrifice time, battle location, and location of the remains, it was discovered that the martyr Liang Baiyou might be the victim of the site where the remains were excavated. , And then confirmed the identity of the martyrs through DNA comparison.

Since 2014, China and South Korea have implemented the handover of the remains of the Chinese People's Volunteers in South Korea for 8 consecutive years, taking 825 the remains of the martyrs back to the motherland.

A long way to find relatives: a memory is the beginning of "going home"

In fact, one year before Liang Debao’s family received the call, the staff of the Veterans Affairs Department had already found “Liang Baiyou" name.

Zhang Xiaodong, a fourth-level investigator of the Commemoration and Memorial Office of the Gansu Provincial Department of Veterans Affairs, said that for some time after that, local staff suffered from "not being able to contact their relatives." They jointly launched a family search with the local media. The administrative divisions of the township and township level have changed.

Zhang Xiaodong said that although Liang Baiyou's search for the original birthplace of the martyrs was unsuccessful, some volunteers provided information that at that time, Lijiaxiang Village in Jinta Township was probably Jinta Lijia Buddha Zhuangzi, but the staff were not in the present Jinta Town. Find the name of this village...

Until about July 2020, a man surnamed Liang called and said, "An elder in the family went to North Korea as a soldier, and then there was no news." He also provided Liang Debao's contact information.

Therefore, Zhang Xiaodong called Liang Debao's family.

For Zhang Xiaodong, finding relatives for the martyrs has only begun since June 2020, and the process of finding relatives by the martyr Liang Baiyou is also the first time he has participated in the process of finding relatives.

During the period, he also received other people seeking relatives who claimed to be "martyrs' families".

"A martyr's certificate, a piece of memory... is all the information that most people can provide." Zhang Xiaodong said that finding relatives for martyrs is a good thing, but it is more difficult to accomplish this.

For example, the clues that relatives can provide are fragmented, communication technology was backward, administrative divisions changed, and the register was incomplete after years of wear and tear...

"But no matter how difficult it is, we must go all out." Zhang Xiaodong said that up to now, with the assistance of relevant departments at the five levels of provinces, cities, counties and villages, and the efforts of all sectors of society and volunteers, the province has contributed to Wuwei. Thirteen martyrs, including Liang Baiyou, found their families.

He also believes that even if the search for relatives is long, there will be more martyrs "find homes" in the future.
