An investigation requested by the European Commission in 2018

The fine against WhatsApp follows an investigation by the Irish data protection authority launched in 2018, at the request of the European Commission.

This procedure focused on WhatsApp's transparency obligations, in particular on the processing of information between WhatsApp and other Facebook companies.

The highest fine against a digital player fell last July.

Luxembourg then sanctioned the American merchant site Amazon with a fine of 746 million euros for non-compliance with European regulations on the private data of Internet users.
