The Egyptian Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Dr. Khaled El-Anany, and Luxor Governor, Counselor Mostafa Elham, accompanied by Egyptian and American officials, inaugurated yesterday the restoration project of the Al-Jeddawi Archaeological Agency, whose landmarks were restored with the funding of the USAID.

The project aimed to rediscover the cultural heritage assets of the historic city of Esna, south of Luxor Governorate, which is rich in archaeological sites, and one of the most popular destinations for Egyptian cultural tourism.

Al-Jeddawi Agency is one of the prominent monuments in the city of Esna, and evidence of the prosperity that the city experienced during the 18th century.

At that time, the city of Esna was a destination for traders from Africa, and a market for gum Arabic, ostrich feathers, ivory, local textiles and oils. The city also played a role in trade between Cairo on the one hand, and the cities of Upper Egypt and trade coming from Africa on the other.

The agency building consists of two floors surrounding an open courtyard, the ground floor was used to store and sell goods, while the upper floor was used to host the visiting merchants of the city.

Al-Jeddawi Agency is one of the rare examples of this type of buildings in Upper Egypt. It is also characterized by decorations of bricks and carved wooden elements, especially in the entrance block and the columns surrounding the courtyard, so it is a witness to the splendor of architecture in Upper Egypt at that period.

In view of its clear historical importance, the state registered the “Al-Jeddawi Agency” among Islamic antiquities in 1951.
