This is the "

new stage of a long escalation

 ", reports

Le Monde Afrique

.

The rupture of diplomatic relations between Algiers and Rabat, announced (the day before yesterday) Tuesday by the Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ramtane Lamamra, did not really surprise in Algeria as the grievances against the neighboring country have accumulated these last months. This rupture was in the air: Algeria had announced, on August 19, a review of its relations with Morocco. To the question of Western Sahara, which permanently poisons relations between the two countries, new disputes have been grafted which have increased tensions. The most serious, in Algiers' eyes, was played out at a meeting of the non-aligned movement in New York on July 13 and 14, when Moroccan Ambassador Omar Hilale distributed a note claiming that the 'valiant Kabyle people deserved, more than any other,to fully enjoy their right to self-determination '. These remarks aroused the fury of the Algerian authorities, but also of the opposition, the implicit parallel made by the representative of Morocco between Kabylia and Western Sahara being considered 'fallacious'. The former Minister of Communication, Abdelaziz Rahabi, denounced a call for 'sedition', a 'hostile action', and called on the 'people and the State' to react with 'force and firmness'.hostile action ', and called on the' people and the state 'to react with' force and firmness'.hostile action ', and called on the' people and the state 'to react with' force and firmness'.

"The false brother unmasked"

And the press of both countries is raising the tone as well ...

"

Aggressive, provocative, hostile, bellicose, unfriendly behavior ... and other qualifiers can be added to the attitude of Morocco which has more than exasperated Algeria to opt for this extreme solution of the rupture of diplomatic relations

", denounces with force the daily

Liberté

in Algiers.

The false brother unmasked,

" is indignant for his part

El Moudjahid

.

Rabat fosters crises by working to worsen them.

Orchestrates hateful press campaigns against the Algerian people and their leaders.

Colonize Western Sahara, block its right to self-determination, in defiance of international law.

Maneuver to introduce the Zionist entity into the African Union.

 "

The "enemy outside" ploy?

The Moroccan press is not to be outdone: “

against all reasonable expectations, each time Morocco takes a step towards its neighbor, the reaction is systematically brutal and clear-cut,

retorts

Le Matin

 à Casablanca

. The declaration of the breakdown of diplomatic relations after the hand extended by His Majesty the King, during the Speech of the Feast of the Throne, as well as the provision of two Canadairs planes to fight against the fires in Algeria, is the paroxysm.

The Opinion

adds: "

the decision of Algiers to sever its diplomatic relations with Morocco represents an eloquent example of the weakness of the Algerian regime which seems to have no other choice but to resort to the stratagem of the 'external enemy' to calm the discontent of his fellow citizens.

27 years of quarrel

In fact, nothing new under the Maghreb sun, notes

Jeune Afrique

 : “

since the borders were closed in 1994, relations between the two countries have rarely known a period of improvement or de-escalation.

Western Sahara, recall of ambassadors, drug trafficking, support for organizations hostile to one or the other, the last 27 years have seen a multiplication of incidents and disputes between the two neighbors.

"

Political and economic upheavals to come?

So what can be the consequences of this diplomatic freeze?

Question asked by

Today

in Burkina Faso.

Regarding Algerian citizens residing in Morocco and vice versa, no impact, responds the newspaper, "

the consulates of the 2 countries remain open

". The consequences are political and economic, points out the Burkinabé daily: "

politically, the rickety Arab Maghreb Union is going to take a serious blow. Already the rather execrable relations between the two countries inhibited this organization, the present rupture will not help matters. The UMA risks at best continuing in its lethargy at worst, we could end up outright abandonment. Others also fear that the Maghreb-Europe gas pipeline route, which runs from Algerian fields to Europe via Morocco, will encounter difficulties. Under Bouteflika, the mercury was rising, but we had never managed to break the links, still reports today. The Arab countries, France but also the United States could help pick up the pieces. It would still be necessary that Rabat and Algiers can no longer evoke these two real subjects, but oh how taboo that the Sahrawi Republic and Kabylia are.
