After a leopard attacked a woman during a photo shoot in Saxony-Anhalt, investigations into the circumstances are ongoing.

The spokesman for the police and the Burgenland district announced on Wednesday.

The 36-year-old from Thuringia was seriously injured in the head by the wild animal in an enclosure.

The woman was taken to a hospital.

Further information on the health of the woman was not given with reference to patient and data protection. A police spokesman in Halle said that those responsible for the wild animal were being investigated on suspicion of negligent bodily harm. At first, it was unclear who organized the photo shoot, whether there were more people there.

According to the police, the 36-year-old was on Tuesday afternoon for photos in the leopard's enclosure.

The wild animal attacked the woman for an unexplained cause.

According to a police spokesman in Nebra, the incident occurred in a so-called senior residence for show animals.

According to initial information, it should be a private facility.

The person responsible for keeping the leopard on the premises could not initially be reached for comment.

According to media reports, there are several animals on the courtyard-like grounds of an animal trainer in the small town, including the leopard.

The website of the so-called senior citizens' residence indicates that animals are housed there in show business after their working life.

The retired animals were booked for photo shoots.

The Burgenland district had already announced on Tuesday evening that a person had been injured in an "incident" with a leopard. At this point in time, no information was available about the exact course and severity of the injuries. A spokesman for the district said on Wednesday that the authority was investigating what had happened on site and what measures had been taken. It is still too early for further details.
