Two men incarcerated in Brest prison (Finistère) were taken into custody on Monday, a few hours after the death of their co-detainee which occurred overnight from Sunday to Monday.

The emergency services were alerted around 4 am that a man had been seriously injured in a fight that took place in the remand center.

When they arrived, they discovered the lifeless body of a 30-year-old inmate.

“One of the three detainees called the intercom during the night to report that a fight had taken place and that one of the detainees was in bad shape.

First aid was immediately provided, unsuccessfully, by my colleagues, ”said local secretary Ufap-Unsa.

Before adding.

"One of the detainees accused himself of having beaten the victim, but these are only his words."

A "fairly violent" person

The trade unionist describes a person "quite violent, who self-harm regularly and had been seen by a doctor in the evening".

“The exact course of the events, which occurred Monday between 3.30 am and 3.45 am, is still being investigated.

They were three inmates in the cell, ”said the prosecution, which specifies that an autopsy was performed.

The union recalls that the standard provides for "two inmates per cell" and not three as was the case in this one.

Brest prison currently accommodates more than 400 inmates, for an estimated capacity of less than 250.
