The former Chadian president died at the age of 79 as a result of Covid-19 in Senegal, where he had been sentenced to life for crimes against humanity.

A controversial figure, he is often described as the architect of a bloody repression in his country.

After years in opposition, Hakainde Hichilema has vowed to fight corruption and end the country's colossal indebtedness.
