After 17 years on the run, a suspected bank robber wanted in Osnabrück was caught in France.

The 38-year-old was arrested in Roscoff in mid-August and is now waiting for his extradition to Germany, police in Osnabrück announced on Tuesday.

The man is under urgent suspicion of attacking two Sparkasse branches in the Lower Saxony city in March and November 2004.

At the time, the perpetrator threatened the bank employees with a pistol and stole a total of around 50,000 euros.

The search success was preceded by long and complex investigations by the police and public prosecutor's office in Osnabrück as well as the Lower Saxony State Criminal Police Office.

Ultimately, the careful securing of evidence led to a DNA hit in the database.

Investigators from Osnabrück had already arrested an internationally wanted suspected bank robber in the Latvian capital Riga in February.

This suspect also attacked two bank branches, is 38 years old and has been on the run for 17 years.

He has already been extradited to Germany and is waiting for his trial.

Whether both suspects and the acts are related is currently being checked, the police said. The offenses they are accused of only become statute-barred after 20 years.
