After the first Corona year, the number of births in Germany only increased slightly from January to May 2021.

With around 315,000 babies, the number of newborn girls and boys increased by 1.4 percent compared to the previous year, the Federal Statistical Office announced on Monday in Wiesbaden.

There was only a significant increase in March with around 3700 babies more than in the same month of the previous year.

In the remaining months characterized by the onset of the corona pandemic, the development was inconspicuous.

The births in the first five months of this year were due to pregnancies that began during the first corona lockdown from late March to early May and in the summer months - when the restrictions on contacts were largely lifted. A total of 154,000 girls and almost 162,000 boys were born alive during the period.
