A diplomat dazzles the “Instagram” audience daily.. Art and sympathy in the time of Corona

Consul: I will continue to make my own kite daily. AFP

A Japanese diplomat in the United States has been posting every day for a whole year through his account on “Instagram” a video clip of a crane from paper that he makes almost identically every day.

"It's my 365 day" in the city, which is located in the northwest of the United States, said the Japanese Consul General in Seattle Hisao Inagaki, on Friday, in a video clip in which he showed his famous bird made of paper folding or the so-called art of origami.

Inagaki, 60, arrived in the United States in August 2020, at a time when contact with others was still very limited due to COVID-19.

The consul told AFP that he started photographing folded paper birds "because of the pandemic."

"I wanted to use my social media accounts to send a message of sympathy to everyone," he added.

Inagaki was keen to film his kite daily from the same angle, in videos of no more than 10 to 11 seconds, and the only changes in the scene were the shirts he wore and the number of days that had passed.

Paper cranes are an old tradition in Japan, as these animals symbolize longevity.

“There is a belief that folding 1,000 paper cranes opens the way to good things,” Inagaki explained, adding that 1,000 does not mean a specific number, but rather “a lot.”

With the exception of the Instagram outage that prevented him from using the network on the 193rd and 194th days, the diplomat stuck to his plan strictly.

"In order to continue (publishing) every day, I think it is best to keep it simple," he said.

Hisao Inagaki carefully keeps each paper bird in a box.

He would like to donate it to a nursery or nursing home upon expiry of his stay in Seattle.

In the meantime, he intends to continue making his own kite daily, which inevitably pleases his followers on “Instagram”, one of whom wrote on the 360th day: “I wait for your clips every day.”
