The president of the garlic sector of Asaja Córdoba and vice president of the National Garlic Table,

Miguel del Pino,

has warned this Thursday of the drought that may affect production in the coming months, especially in the Montalbán area, from where the Farmers have already transferred some plantations to other areas of

Andalusia and Castilla-La Mancha

as they have groundwater that allows the development of garlic.

In statements to Canal Sur Televisión, collected by Europa Press, Del Pino explained that "the problem lies in the fact that the cultivation of garlic is very expensive, because a hectare costs at least 12,000 euros to carry it to the end", so " it is necessary that they leave enough kilos not to lose money ".

In this regard, he commented that "garlic needs very little water, with 3,000 cubic meters per hectare, which compared to other crops is very little water, but it needs it at the time", so that it has warned that "the problem that now It is presented is that

the swamps, unfortunately, are around 20% in the Genil-Cabra area,

which is supplied from the Iznájar swamp ".

As he asserted, "there is water to sow until October 31, if it does not rain, the water is cut", so that he has remarked that "the fear of the farmer is that he puts 12,000 euros per hectare and if they do not give water for for garlic to grow and form a head, it is ruined. "

Given this, he reported that "they are desperately looking for land where there is water", to which he added that "where there is more probability" is in areas with "groundwater", hence they are looking for well areas, specifying that " there is underground water in Andalusia and in fact there are ajeros who have gone to

Seville and Antequera (Malaga) ".

However, the representative of the sector has assured that "where there is more possibility of underground water is in Castilla-La Mancha", so that "there are already ajeros who are thinking, and some have left, to be sure of not being ruined and that they can have water, "he defended.

In addition, Del Pino has commented that "the cultivation of garlic does not have excessive wages", highlighting that "the wages are in the shelling, which can be done in Montalbán", at the same time that "a lot of labor is needed when cutting the garlic, which usually comes from abroad, from

Morocco and Romania,

although also from the area, but to a lesser extent ".

In this sense, he has detailed that "although the garlic is sown in

Castilla-La Mancha

, they reach the warehouses of

Córdoba,

which is where a large amount of labor resides", so that "not so much is lost in labor work if they go to other areas ", has abounded, among other aspects, stating that in the situation of the swamps" more water than the account goes to the sea and it is a pity that it is so much needed ".

Therefore, it has asked the

Guadalquivir Hydrographic Confederation (CHG)

that "when the water runs out on October 31 and the Confederation determines if there is some water and for which crops, that they give some water" to the garlic sector, "as it happened, unfortunately, many years ago", insisting that they "need very little" for its development.
