Horrible accident off the coast of Ibiza: A man died when a ferry ran over his rubber dinghy as it entered the port of the Spanish Mediterranean island at night.

The Spanish sea rescue service announced on Wednesday that the 46-year-old Spaniard was beheaded.

The accident occurred on Tuesday around 11.35 p.m.

The second occupant (46) of the inflatable boat, which was completely destroyed in the accident, was able to save himself by jumping into the water.

A little later, he was recovered slightly injured and taken to the hospital.

As the regional newspaper "Diario de Ibiza" reported, citing the Guardia Civil, the head of the deceased was searched by divers from the police unit in the water on Wednesday.

Although the cause of the accident was not initially clear, media cited spokesman for the authorities with the assumption that the approximately eight-meter-long rubber dinghy was probably overlooked from the ferry because it apparently did not have the navigation lights required at night.

The ferry operated by the Baleària company traveled between the islands of Formentera and Ibiza, which, like Mallorca and Menorca, are part of the Balearic Islands. Baleària regretted the accident and stressed that they were working with the authorities to determine the cause. The 132 passengers and ten crew members of the ferry were uninjured, it said.
