Thousands of people have been brought to safety in southern France because of a serious forest fire.

The evacuation was a precautionary measure, said the fire department in the Var department on Tuesday.

The fire that broke out on Monday slightly injured three people.

19 people are said to have suffered smoke inhalation, reported the French news channel BFMTV.

Accordingly, 5,000 hectares of land had been destroyed by the forest fires on Tuesday morning.

According to the prefecture, several campsites were evacuated around the town of Grimaud, which is near Saint-Tropez.

The fire brigade is deployed with around 750 emergency services.

In Turkey and in southern Europe, especially in Italy and Greece, there were still strong fires recently.

Heat, drought and strong winds made the extinguishing work difficult.

In Italy there was no end in sight until the very end.
