[SBS Special] The Age of Immortality Part 1: Machine Man - Cyborg and Digital Twin

Can you live

forever with

the power of science?

In the SBS special summer special aired on the 15th, 'Immortal Age - Part 1: Machine Man - Cyborg and Digital Twin' was released.

On this day's broadcast, we had time to explore whether we could overcome death, the fate of human beings, with human power.

Ji Seung-ryeol, who is raising two daughters alone, lost his wife, who was suddenly diagnosed with cancer last year. He said, "My wife was the universe and everything was the same to me, but if this person disappears, how will I live? I was worried about how to raise my children."

34-year-old Kim Se-chang is a former health trainer who was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. He lost 15 kilos in six months through hard treatment, and his life was completely different from the life he had before.

Ji Seung-ryeol participated in the digital twin project for the first time in Korea for the sake of her two beloved daughters and Kim Se-chang to shake off the fear of death.

British robotic scientist Dr. Peter Scott is a patient with ALS. He started the so-called machine man project, saying that he would go beyond the limits of human beings while his physical abilities were deteriorating. In order to become a cyborg himself, he declared that he would replace his weakened organs with a machine and changed his metabolic activity. And I decided to create another digital twin of me in the computer.

Before the muscles in his mouth were paralyzed, he recorded many sentences in various tones and put them into his avatar named Peter 2.0. In particular, it turns out that Peter 2.0 learns through deep learning and thinks and speaks like a real Peter, rather than answering exactly what Peter recorded.

Then I started to wonder what was AI and what was Peter. To this, Dr. Peter replied, "My existence can be seen as a combination of me and AI." So, did Dr. Peter's dream of becoming a machine and living forever have come true?

Dr. Rahman said he was right and said, "The system is making him live. He will live in communication with the world for a longer time." And Peter 2.0 said positively, "With this growth, you will feel less fear of death and more freedom than ever before."

For the first digital twin project in Korea, three different teams gathered and started work. A key element of the digital twin is the input of human real memories and thoughts as data, and the work of collecting data has been put into operation.

Muhammad, a professor at the University of Washington, developed the father chatbot, feeling sad that his beloved daughter who was born after losing his father, who was his world, could not meet a wonderful father. He first entered all of his father's data into a computer and turned it into data. Then, he created his father's AI with vast amounts of data and operated a conversational algorithm. As a result of exchanging questions and answers and giving AI deep learning, he faced his father's digital twin.

Although the digital twin he developed is still lacking, he will continue to upgrade and he is sure that it will become a meaningful existence for the living.

And the experts said the future is not far off, when anyone who wants to have a digital twin. In an era when the boundaries between the real and virtual worlds are blurring, digital twins become popular and if technology develops further, BCI technology that can transfer thoughts from the brain to a computer without laborious input will be realized. And if it develops further, there may come an era when I can transfer my entire memory and consciousness to a computer. As if in line with this expectation, Musk recently attracted attention as it is known that he is developing a technology that can store memories or thoughts by inserting a microchip into the brain.

Neil Bison, who introduces himself as a cyborg, had an antenna implanted in his head. He was seeing the world in a different way than we know it. To him, the colors we see sounded like scales. He implanted an antenna to overcome obstacles. He was unable to recognize colors due to a congenital disability, but he had the belief that he could overcome the limitations inherent in science and technology, and he became a cyborg by implanting a color-recognizing machine into his body.

He also had unexpected difficulties as he had extraordinary abilities. He needed electricity to sustain life, so he needed to be recharged every four or five days. He also fought a battle with the British government, which banned the use of photos of people wearing electronic devices on passports.

The world's first cyborg fully integrated with a machine. The media from around the world paid attention to him, saying that a new human being was born. And he said that becoming a cyborg changed everything to be positive and hopeful.

After the domestic digital twin production is over, the day to finally release the digital twin has arrived. While talking to his digital twin, Se-chang Kim was startled by the same voice as his own. And he admired, "It would be great if there was something like this. I've been thinking about something these days, and I thought he might be able to sort it out."

At that time at home, the mother met her son's twin. And he smiled brightly at the thought that he could see his son whenever he wanted to.

Ji Seung-ryeol also met his wife's digital twin for the first time. But his expression was not good. Seungryeol said, "When I see my wife's video, my emotions react before the opposite sex, but this is just a different person. Facial expressions, faces, and voices are all the same." "If I feel this way, my children will be more."

The digital twin developer said, "I need a high-definition frontal photo, but most of the photos were taken with a cell phone, and there was a lot of noise in the video, so it was difficult to work." He also promised to re-produce the digital twin, saying, "I failed this time, but I will work for at least another year, or at least 6 months, to impress children."

Meanwhile, the narration of this documentary is based on the recently finished SBS drama 'Model Taxi'.Lee Je-hoon, the dark hero of the movie, drew attention.
