Conservation Saving the loggerhead turtle: this is how the first born in the Canary Islands for centuries will arrive in Fuerteventura
Catalonia Climate change consolidates Catalan beaches as turtle nesting areas
The Cabildo de La Palma has reported the rescue during this week of a 36 kg loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) after being spotted by the residents of the town of Puerto Espíndola with a large amount of fishing gear and raffia material entangled in his right front fin, which
prevented him from swimming normally, causing serious injuries
.
According to the Insular Corporation, the Environment staff went to the area and collected the specimen, which, unfortunately, had to have its fin amputated because it was completely necrotic.
In a statement, the councilor of the area, María Rodríguez, highlighted "the good work of citizens by promptly raising the alarm bells, demonstrating their commitment to conservation and biodiversity."
For his part, he stressed "
the importance of avoiding the dumping of garbage and fishing gear
in the ocean given the serious conservation problems that this entails in the marine environment."
