There will be no New Zealand for the Hobbit.

Amazon's announcement sparked consternation in the country.

It is true that the filming of the

Lord of the Rings

trilogy

in the early 2000s had been a windfall for New Zealand, attracting millions of tourists each year.

One can imagine the expectations aroused in the country by the creation of a series inspired by Tolkien's novel.

Tourism and film professionals alike were already rejoicing, hoping that all of this would help make New Zealand one of the world leaders in the film industry, especially when it comes to digital special effects.

Under these conditions, the relocation of the filming to Great Britain is "

a terrible blow, a huge missed opportunity for New Zealand

", regretted the spokesman of the opposition, Todd McClay.
