Because of the drought .. Namibia sells 57 villas at auction!

Namibia has announced the sale of a third of the 170 elephants it has put up for sale in order to reduce the numbers of these animals due to drought and confrontations with the population.

The Ministry of Environment revealed in a statement that it "succeeded in selling 57 of the 170 elephants that were the focus of bids in December 2020".

The government earned from this sale 5.9 million local dollars (400,000 US dollars).

Namibia, a semi-arid country in southern Africa with little population density, is home to about 28,000 elephants, according to official estimates.

The government resorted to the idea of selling these live animals after criticizing them for killing them to limit their numbers.

The spokesman for the Ministry of Environment, Romeo Muyonda, attributed the low percentage of purchase to the tight condition of buyers and selling conditions.

"It is an auction, and the demand and supply must be balanced, and there are no guarantees for the seller or the potential buyer," he said.

He pointed out that it is possible that some potential buyers have changed their minds "due to the negative hype surrounding this sale."
