A tourist from Austria died in Mallorca when he fell from a cliff.

The accident happened on Friday in Port de Sóller in the northwest of the Spanish holiday island, as the media reported on Saturday, citing the police.

The 61-year-old man fell several meters into the depth.

Several witnesses saw the accident and immediately alerted the police and the ambulance service, wrote the Mallorca magazine in the online edition.

The man hit stony ground and was dead on the spot.

According to reports, the accident site on the rugged northwest coast of Mallorca was extremely difficult to access, even for the experienced rescue teams.

The corpse was therefore taken away by boat after the complicated recovery.

The cause of the accident was initially unknown.

However, the authorities largely ruled out any third-party debt.

Nevertheless, an investigation had been initiated, said the Guardia Civil police unit on request.

Port de Sóller is a popular starting point for hikes in the region with the Serra da Tramontana mountain range and the famous towns of Deià and Valldemossa.

Accidents in which hikers fall into the depths are not uncommon there.
