American found dead after trying to climb Mont Blanc

A 65-year-old American man was found dead Friday, the day after he went missing in France's Mont Blanc, mountain rescue units said, confirming information published by the newspaper "Le Dauphiné Libres".

The man went missing after he was absent from Thursday night at a mountain shelter where he was staying.

After a day of searching, the gendarmerie in Chamonix found his body at the bottom of a rift at an altitude of nearly 4,500 meters, on the way to the summit of Montblanc, according to the same source.

The search is also underway for a South Korean climber who has been missing in this mountainous region since Tuesday.

On Friday, local authorities attributed these accidents to a "lack of technical know-how", considering it "illogical" for "trained climbers" to venture up Mont Blanc even via the normal route, without the supervision of a professional mountain guide.
