The epidemic peak is confirmed.

Last week, French hospitals observed an increase in hospitalizations of 92%, twice as much as last week when there was already an increase in admissions of 51%, compared to the week of July 12.

The same goes for critical care services, which take care of the most serious Covid-19 patients, where admissions have doubled (+ 98%) after an increase of 81% the previous week.

"The increase in the number of new hospitalizations and admissions in critical care has accelerated", indicates Public Health France in its weekly update on the pandemic, "confirming the hospital impact of this fourth epidemic wave".

In all, last week 3,531 patients with Covid-19 were admitted to hospital and 746 in critical care.

The younger and younger patients

"The number of deaths linked to Covid-19 has increased for the second week in a row", with 272 deaths last week, or 93% more than the previous week. Hospitalization rates "were on the increase in the majority of regions" and were highest in Corsica, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur and Occitanie where the White Plans were reactivated this week, as well as in Martinique and France. Guadeloupe, where confinements have been decided.

“The median age of patients on admission to hospital” is “decreasing”, also underlines Public Health France. Last week, “he was 57”, up from 63 last year at the same time. This median age "had increased until November 2020 to reach 79 years and then decreased continuously from December 2020". "This observation reflects the impact of vaccination", started at the end of December 2020, "which primarily targeted the elderly", which we therefore "mechanically" found less among hospitalized people, explained Nicolas Methy, epidemiologist at Health public in France, during an online press point.

The median age of patients on admission to critical care is also declining: it was 59 last week compared to 61 last year at the same time.

It "had increased until December 2020 to reach 71 years old and then decreased from January 2021", specifies Public Health France.
