In Réunion, the crucial challenge for the authorities is to speed up vaccination while the coronavirus epidemic is gaining ground.

According to the latest report of the ARS of Thursday relayed by

Réunion 1re

, 42% of the inhabitants of the island have received at least one dose (against 65.3% nationally) and 30.7% are fully vaccinated (against 54 , 3% nationally).

500 cases detected every day

In its press release, the Regional Health Agency judges that this vaccination coverage is "insufficient to cope with the epidemic and to move towards collective immunity".

To convince the inhabitants to be vaccinated, she specified that "the level of contamination has never been so high, with a daily average of more than 500 positive cases during the last seven days".

For several weeks, Reunion Islanders have been increasingly contaminated by the Beta and Delta variants.

The latter now affects around 50% of patients and should increase further in the days to come.

The situation is therefore critical because "the Delta variant is potentially at least three times more contagious than the original virus, without respecting barrier gestures and without the benefit of vaccination".

31 patients are under 60 years old

In a previous press release published on Tuesday, the ARS specified that out of 117 intensive care beds 45 were occupied by Covid-19 patients.

31 patients were aged between 27 and 60 years and 14 were between 61 and 89 years old.

According to figures from the Covid Tracker site this Friday, the incidence rate reached 407 in Reunion Island and two deaths were recorded on average every day between July 30 and August 5.

Since the weekend of July 31, confinement and a curfew have been established by the prefect for a minimum period of two weeks.

Restaurants, bars, sports halls are closed.

Groups of more than six people and picnics are prohibited.
