The violent fires that have struck Greece for a week due to scorching temperatures continue to wreak havoc: 16 people slightly burned or suffering from respiratory problems were hospitalized on August 5 and 6.

"About ten people were [admitted to hospital] with respiratory problems at the Istiea dispensary on the island of Evia, including two firefighters," said Greek Minister of Health Vassilis Kikilias, while Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis deplored the "extremely critical situation" facing the country. 

French reinforcements

A firefighter and five residents also suffered minor burns in the blaze that engulfed villages in northern Athens, and were hospitalized Thursday evening, according to the Greek news agency ANA.

In addition to forests and villages on the island of Evia, 200 km east of Athens, it is especially the village of Afidnes which was the prey of a violent fire during the night from Thursday to Friday. from Mount Parnes 30 km north of Athens.

At least 450 Greek firefighters intervened in this incident, aided by air resources and land vehicles.

Some 82 French firefighters - soldiers and civilians - arrived Thursday evening from Marseille and were to intervene on this disaster on Friday.
