The UAE... Qualitative achievements in 3D printing

The UAE has made unprecedented achievements in using 3D printing technology and harnessing it to serve various vital sectors, affirming its determination to reach its desired goal of becoming a leading global center in this field by 2030.

The UAE has succeeded in enhancing the presence of 3D printing technology in various aspects of life, foremost of which is health, through qualitative achievements, such as designing a model of a child’s heart printed using 3D printing technology, which contributed to facilitating the treatment process by a specialized medical team in Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, as well as The medical precedent achieved by the Dubai Health Authority in 2018, by providing a citizen with artificial legs, which were produced using 3D printing technology, to restore his ability to move normally.

The Dubai 3D Printing Strategy, launched in 2016, aims to print alternative models of human organs, such as the heart, kidney, brain, etc., print ceramic teeth in less than 20 minutes, and produce artificial limbs using 3D printing technology at a cost of less than 400 dirhams by year 2025.

The UAE is one of the first countries in the world to put 3D printing technology on the front line with the emerging corona virus, after the success of many scientific and research institutions in creating advanced types of medical masks, artificial respirators, and virus examination swabs through the use of this technology. Enhance its ability to meet the growing demand for these tools since the beginning of the pandemic.

Last June, the Zayed Higher Organization for People of Determination launched the first workshop specialized in the use of 3D printing to develop medical products that cover the needs of students of determination, such as medical supports for treatment and rehabilitation, with the efforts of people of determination themselves.

Not only did the 3D printing technology in the UAE enter the human body, but it also went beyond it to his home and place of work, as the Emirate of Dubai witnessed the inauguration of the “Office of the Future”, the first building printed with 3D printing technology in the world, while the Emirate of Sharjah inaugurated in 2020 the first house that was built 3D printing techniques, with traditional architectural designs.

According to Decree No. (24) of 2021 regulating the use of 3D printing technology in construction works in the Emirate of Dubai, 25% of the total buildings that will be built in Dubai after the provisions of this decree will be made with 3D printing technology by 2030.

3D printing has strengthened its presence in the industrial sector in the country, through a set of agreements and partnerships concluded by major national industrial entities with many international companies specialized in this field.

In 2018, Siemens and Strata Manufacturing, a company specializing in the manufacture of composite aircraft structural parts, and Etihad Airways, the national carrier of the United Arab Emirates, announced their collaboration to manufacture the first aircraft interior parts in the Middle East. and North Africa, which are produced using 3D printing.

The partnership aims to revolutionize the aerospace industry by leveraging 3D printing technologies to enable aerospace companies to improve the design process of aircraft parts, help them manufacture complex parts to order, or produce parts for discontinued parts.

The Executive Council of the Emirate of Dubai approved the establishment of the first specialized and integrated 3D printing area in the "Expo" area, aimed at attracting entrepreneurs and investors, and allowing researchers to develop this technology locally and globally.

The zone will include a research center, an academy and laboratories for 3D printing that will help research and develop this technology locally and globally, in addition to 3D printing accelerators.
