In the middle of the ongoing Summer Olympics, the birthplace of the first Olympic Games risks being devoured by flames.

With temperatures up to 45 degrees and 118 forest fires in 24 hours, Greece, with the support of several countries, including Sweden, is struggling to minimize destruction and save lives.

One of the worst affected areas is the Peloponnese peninsula, where several ancient relics are found.

Among other things, the shrine in Olympia.

The place has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since the 80s and the Olympic flame is still lit there, to be traditionally taken to the next Olympic venue.

The area was most ravaged by fire in 2007, but the ancient shrine survived.

The area is now cordoned off and extinguishing work is underway to protect the site.

Olympic Games were held in Greece for more than 1000 years, between about 776 BC and 393 AD.
