A hand carved causes a security alert at Frankfurt Airport

A harmless sculpture of a hand grenade in a suitcase during a flight to the United States has led to the formation of a bomb disposal team at Frankfurt Airport, Germany.

German Federal Police said Wednesday that a baggage handler discovered the alleged grenade as it passed an X-ray detector.

Police cordoned off the area. The plane, which was on the tarmac, was unable to take off for Washington after a delay of about an hour and a half because of the bag.

The police indicated that the bomb disposal teams were quickly able to clarify the situation.

Police said the sculpture was not fit for use as a grenade.

Police said it was never dangerous.

The owner of the bag, a 56-year-old US citizen, was able to travel after that, but the police said that his luggage would follow him to the United States later.
