Nearly 30,000 road accident victims in 2020 were caused by uninsured drivers.

This was revealed on Wednesday by the Victims Guarantee Fund (FGAO) to France Info.

If the figure (27,332 victims, to be precise) is down 14.4% compared to 2019, it is only because of the very sharp drop in road traffic known at the time of confinement, in the spring.

The total compensation paid to these victims (more than 106 million euros) is, for example, up 10% compared to 2015.

Of these 27,000 victims, the FGAO specifies that 7,984 are bodily victims, of which 128 have died.

As a reminder, insuring your vehicle is compulsory: the fine for lack of insurance is 750 euros.

An amount that can be multiplied by ten in the event of a repeat offense.

Above all, in the event of an accident where an uninsured person is responsible, the latter will have to reimburse the Guarantee Fund for the compensation of victims… with an increase of 10%.

The FGAO notes that the lack of insurance is above all correlated with poverty, all the more so in a period of economic crisis: "The current situation may soon reveal a population which will not necessarily have the means to insure";

foresees the director of the FGAO, Philippe Roux, at France Info.

60% of the uninsured are under 35 and 80% are men.
