Coronavirus Vaccine in pregnant women: safe, effective and key to avoid complications
Public Health WHO includes pregnant women on the priority list for Covid vaccination
As the months of
living with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus
progress
- more than a year and a half now - the evidence of how it affects pregnant women has led to prioritizing the vaccination of this group.
Regardless of the woman's age or gestation weeks, as initially proposed, "the vaccination of pregnant women should be prioritized due to their increased risk against Covid-19,
promoting specific recruitment strategies for pregnant women."
This has been determined by the Public Health Commission, of the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Federation of Spanish Scientific Medical Associations (Facme) in a document that includes recommendations on vaccination in pregnant women and that has been raised to
the Interterritorial Council of this Wednesday to implement it in all autonomous communities.
Clearly,
Public Health recommends vaccination against Covid-19 for pregnant women
.
Remember that the vaccine prevents complications during pregnancy in any case, but especially if "there are higher risk factors such as obesity, age over 35 years, high blood pressure, diabetes or pre-eclampsia."
There is no contraindication for vaccination against Covid "in any trimester of pregnancy" and, in addition, they warn that pregnant women must be facilitated to arrive fully vaccinated
"at the period of maximum risk of complications in case of Covid infection
.
"
This is the end of the second and third trimesters of pregnancy.
The vaccines that, from Public Health, choose for
the vaccination of pregnant women are those of mRNA, these are Pfizer and Moderna
"regardless of the age of the pregnant woman."
They also send
a message to the people who are the closest environment to pregnant women
, reminding them that it is "important that they are correctly vaccinated against Covid and that, both pregnant and cohabiting, reinforce prevention measures."
For women planning to become pregnant, the document recommends "consulting your healthcare professional about the best time to get vaccinated."
The Public Health Commission justifies
the current recommendation
in "increasing the incidence of infection in pregnant women, with an increase in hospitalization, ICU admissions and fatal cases."
In search of scientific evidence
In the seventh update of the Ministry's Vaccination Strategy, dated May 11, the indication for pregnant women was that they should be vaccinated "when appropriate according to the prioritization group to which they belonged."
The latest update of the Vaccination Strategy of the Ministry of Health,
the eighth, dated June 22, recognized that there was a greater risk of "severe Covid (admission to the ICU, mechanical ventilation, use of ECMO and death) in pregnant women compared to non-pregnant women, as well as premature delivery, preeclampsia and thrombotic events, and regardless of the risk conditions presented by the woman ".
But, then, more than a month and a half ago, from Health it was assured that "there is still no information that relates the ideal time to vaccinate the pregnant woman and the greater protection conferred on the newborn."
However, the latest update of the
Vaccination Strategy recalls that despite the existing doubts the United States, United Kingdom, Canada or Australia
"recommend vaccination without specifying the most suitable moment of gestational age."
However, with this document that is being discussed in the Interterritorial Council, there is no doubt about the need to immunize this group of women.
The risk of admission of the unvaccinated pregnant woman
In this sense,
the Secretary of Public Health of Catalonia, Carmen Cabezas,
has spoken this Wednesday.
Cabezas pointed out that Health has set the vaccination against Covid-19 of pregnant women as a priority and has warned of the risks of not doing so, especially among pregnant women with added pathological factors.
In this sense, it has indicated that
unvaccinated pregnant women have 4.2 times the risk of becoming infected and that, if they are infected, they have a 5.4 times greater risk of entering.
In addition, the unvaccinated have a risk multiplied by 23 of ending up entering with respect to the vaccinated.
"The very clear message is that you have to get vaccinated if a person is pregnant", Cabezas stressed, pointing out that "if you are breastfeeding or pregnant, you can get vaccinated at any time during pregnancy" and has indicated that since January 1 of this year 549 pregnant women have been admitted for covid-19,
52 of which in ICUs
.
There have been no deaths.
