The series takes place during Midgård's second age, thousands of years before the events in the Sagan om ringen films.

The series begins during a relatively peaceful period and follows an ensemble of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront a long-feared return of evil to Middle-earth.

At the premiere, the series will be available in 240 different countries and regions around the world.

After that, one episode per week is released.

The recording has been described as the world's most expensive to date, the first season cost 465 million dollars, equivalent to 3.9 billion kronor, to record.

Two of the episodes are directed by Swedish Charlotte Brändström, who previously worked on TV series such as The Witcher, Jupiter's Legacy and Outlander.
