The enormous fire which ravaged the mountain of Alaric (Aude) on nearly 850 hectares is "under control" according to the firefighters of the department.

The flames which appeared on Saturday around 11 a.m. on the central median of the A61 between the towns of Moux and Foncouverte, were most likely due to a cigarette butt according to the firefighters.

This fire required enormous resources with 900 personnel activated on the ground, seven Canadair, two water bombers and a Super Puma helicopter.

The fire also had a strong impact on populations, in France with power cuts around Perpignan and Biarritz, and in the neighboring Iberian Peninsula, with similar problems in Spain and Portugal.

Thanks to the intervention of the firefighters, thousands of hectares and around thirty houses were saved.

An important monitoring system remains mobilized in order to take no risk.

"We have 320 firefighters on surveillance on the edges that we will maintain as long as conditions require", specifies the Departmental Fire and Rescue Operational Center (Codis) of Aude.
