The Ministry of Health investigates the death of a 36-year-old man two weeks after receiving the Janssen vaccine and once the doctors who treated him at the Virgen del Rocío Hospital in Seville pointed to the probable direct relationship between the drug received and death.

The man, who had no previous diagnosed pathology, was vaccinated with Janssen in his workplace in a town in the province of Seville, like many other colleagues, on June 25, under the agreement signed by the Junta de Andalucía and some large companies to expedite the immunization of their employees.

A few days later, he

began to feel discomfort, which he attributed to the side effects of the vaccine

. But, on Monday, July 5, the symptoms worsened and he had to be transferred by ambulance to the Hospital Comarcal de la Merced (Osuna). According to the testimony of his family, there they did the first tests and it was determined that he had suffered a stroke, after which it was decided to transfer him by helicopter to the Virgen del Rocío Hospital in Seville, where he died in a matter of hours.

The

Ministry of Health has confirmed to EL MUNDO

that the event has been transferred to the Andalusian Center for Pharmacovigilance, which, immediately, also reported the events to the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products "to proceed with its investigation according to current protocols ".

The Andalusian Government stresses that it is the Ministry of Health who must communicate the results if the case is confirmed.

"

Faced with this type of suspicion, it is vital to rule out any cause-effect relationship through studies and scientific tests

," they reiterate from the Ministry.

This newspaper has also contacted the Ministry, which refers to the reports periodically published by the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS), which is in charge of assessing suspected adverse reactions reported in Spain with all authorized medications, including vaccines.

The latest report is the one published on June 15, 2021

, so it does not include anything in relation to the case of Seville.

According to the account of his relatives, the doctors who treated the deceased man did not hesitate to establish a relationship between the vaccine and the multiple thrombi that, apparently, the patient had suffered to the point of causing a multi-organ failure that caused his death.

And they informed their relatives that the case would be transferred to the health authorities.

However,

the family has yet to receive any report certifying the official cause of death

.

Neither the death certificate they need to file any type of complaint.

They only have the brief response to a first claim that they presented at the Virgen del Rocío Hospital, in which they are urged to transfer what happened to the company where they were vaccinated.

In the reply sent to the family, it is stated verbatim: «In relation to your claim letter dated July 6, we must inform you that the Board's Complaints Book is the channel to report a situation that occurred in a public center, for what we understand that the processing of your complaint by us does not proceed.

His brother's vaccine, sadly deceased, was administered at his workplace, so you must inform said company what happened so that the pertinent investigations can be started in relation to your case. "

Yesterday, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Health contacted the family to make himself available to them and assure them that they would be informed of all the news about the case.

In its vaccination strategy,

the Ministry of Health establishes that the Janssen vaccine is dispensed only to those over 40 years of age

. With extraordinary character and since it is the only authorized one that achieves complete immunization with a single dose, it is also being used for special groups, for example, students who are going abroad soon, sailors who have to embark, immigrants who are passing through or even people without a fixed home who are more difficult to reach for a second dose.

Although it is not expressly described in the protocol of the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Health maintains that it is consistent with the National Vaccination Strategy to inject the Janssen compound into the workers of the companies attached to the Sumamos Plan, the program launched to streamline the immunization of the population in the workplace. In the response offered to EL MUNDO, the Ministry of Health assures that Andalusia has included, "among these groups of difficult accessibility, workers from companies attached to the Sumamos Plan, vulnerable groups from a social, economic and / or labor point of view , to aid workers who travel on mission to other countries, to stevedores, pilots, fishermen or students of the Erasmus program ".

Janssen's vaccine is

based on a very similar technology (adenovirus) to AstraZeneca's

and both have shown a risk of thrombotic events. It is approved by the European Medicines Agency for those over 18 years of age, as stated in the drug's own technical data sheet. However, the National Vaccination Strategy of the Ministry of Health has been limiting its use by age group. In the first instance, it was approved only for the segment between 70 and 79 years old, to later expand it until finally allowing its dispensation for those over 40 years old.

Some autonomous communities such as Andalusia or Madrid have demanded that the Ministry authorize its use for all those of legal age, which would speed up the vaccination campaign and also compensate for the insufficient rate of arrival of other vaccines such as those from Pfizer or Moderna.

However, the position of the Ministry is for the moment firm against expanding the age groups and appeals to the criteria of the experts in the vaccine presentation.

Spain has acquired a total of 17,598,400 doses of Janssen vaccines

, of which it has received and delivered to the autonomous communities just over 2.4 million doses and has administered 1.7 million, representing 71.3 % of those received, a percentage far from the degree of administration of the other vaccines, all of which are above 91%.

In the case of Andalusia, 256,861 people have been vaccinated with the Janssen compound.

Until the case registered in Seville, there had been no suspicious death related to the Janssen vaccine in Spain.

The latest AEMPS report does collect five deaths in Spain associated with the AstraZeneca vaccine.
