Greece is angry at the death of a seal... and is on alert to search for the "perpetrator of the operation"

A monk seal on the Greek island of Alonissos died yesterday with a spear gun, a local NGO announced, in an act that sparked outrage among residents and environmental activists.

According to the website of the island, which is one of the most important marine reserves in Europe, in this part of the Aegean there are "specific areas where amateur fishing is allowed."

“Unfortunately, it has been proven once again that human wickedness and stupidity have no limits! Today we learned that the young seal of the monk Costis, which in recent months has become the emblem of Alonissos, was deliberately killed.”

The organization, which works to defend the endangered species in the Mediterranean, said on Facebook that the animal was "executed at close range with a spear gun".

The organization told AFP that residents of the island of Folegandros found the young male seal in 2018 in the Cyclades islands, and he was in poor condition after the passage of Hurricane Zorbas.

And media information reported on the alert to find the perpetrator of the operation.

"The impact of this news is very sad not only for the members of the NGO who have taken care of Kostis for months, but also for all the residents and visitors of Alonissos who had the opportunity to see Kostis closely," the organization "Momm" wrote in its letter.
